In the action-packed military film “Land of Bad,” there are two main heroes, but one stands out more convincingly than the other. The film shines brightest when it focuses on hero #1, the skilled yet inexperienced Air Force Sergeant J.J. “Playboy” Kinney, portrayed by Liam Hemsworth. Hemsworth convincingly embodies a man of action, thanks to impressive action choreography and direction. While “Land of Bad” markets itself as a thrilling rescue mission reminiscent of “Black Hawk Down,” it often veers into a drawn-out lecture on the issues plaguing the American military and contemporary warfare.
As Kinney’s guide, Grimm helps the overwhelmed yet capable soldier navigate enemy territory in pursuit of a high-stakes hostage. This prisoner is a CIA operative who has been gathering intel on a perilous Russian arms dealer. However, the stakes become secondary once Kinney’s team confronts their ruthless adversaries.
